Awoma
Strasbourg, Alsace, France
Research & Development Manager, CEO

Company. Awoma is a development tools vendor, specialized in the Java EE (J2EE) environment. Awoma products include ThinStructure Framework, a unique framework that enables business oriented developers (Cobol, 4GL, Visual Basic, PowerBuilder) to develop Java web applications, and ThinStructure DB Studio, a powerful data manipulation tool. Awoma facilities are found in the United States (Sales, Marketing) and in France (R&D, Production, Quality Assurance, and Technical Support).

Research & Development Manager. The development of the core technology was initiated by the end of 2002. It implied many web, Java, XML and parsing technologies (covering Java, Servlets, Java EE, HTML, JavaMail, JDBC, XML, Eclipse...). Other technologies were studied like EJB, JSP, JSF...

The first phase of the technological project was to master all the Java EE technologies, in order to find a corresponding development paradigm with procedural development. This step required in-depth technology acquisition (conference in the United States, attending numerous user groups, training of co-workers).

The second phase was to realize our proof of concept and transform it in a product, following classic – but dynamic – project and team management, while keeping our specifications.

The third and last phase was to deliver, verify the suitability with customers and users, insure technical support and offer maintenance.

During these steps, recurring tasks were needed: technology intelligence (study of potential competitors products, Java EE market trends), management of the technical team, follow-up of customers. My responsibilities included IT strategy choices (web site, e-commerce, security…) These tasks were realized in a highly international environment with customers in the United States and partners in Great Britain and Germany. On this technical site, my main responsibilities were:
  • Company’s IT strategy.
  • Management of resources.
  • Study and validation of needs.
  • Overall project management.
  • Validation of technical solutions.
  • Securing the appropriateness between developments and needs.
  • Technology intelligence.
Results were:
  • Quality deliverables within deadlines.
  • High level of employee loyalty.
  • High satisfaction of users and customers.

CEO. As the CEO of the company, I was in charge of the organization of both the French company and the US subsidiary. Capital raising among Business Angels. Writing of Business Plans in French and in English. Interaction with local government, accounting, law firms, various agencies…

Technologies. Java (Java SE, Java EE), Informix 4GL, Servlets, HTML / XHTML, CSS, JavaMail, JDBC, XML and its derivates, HTTP, UML, Eclipse, make, CVS, Linux, HP-UX, Solaris, Windows, Informix, MySQL.

Skills. Architect, project management, training, evangelization, marketing development, technical writing, customer follow-up.

11/1997 – 11/2002
(5 years)
Four J’s Development Tools
Schiltigheim, Alsace, France
Project manager for e-business & front-ends

Company. Four J’s Development Tools develops and distributes an enhanced Informix 4GL compiler that connects to Informix, Oracle, DB2 and other main databases and to thin clients under Web, WAP, Java-based, Windows, X11 and VT-style terminals. The compiler and associated run times are running on Windows NT and major Unix (HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, SCO, Linux, DG-UX...).

Senior Project Manager. Thanks to the success of the e-business products I was responsible of, I have been in charge of e-business and all front-ends. Front-ends include all thin clients and user interface applications that connect to the Application Server or directly to the business logic applications. This include:
  • 4 main products.
  • 8 people directly involved in the project.
  • 12 shared resources.
August 2002 – November 2002.

e-business Project Manager. Creation of an “internal start-up” to catch up our late arrival in the e-business field. Management of heavy investment on new technologies and highly skilled and different team member profiles. The result was an impressive solution, developed in months. The solution is in production for most customers, since both its releases in November 2000 and December 2001. Among current features is output in various formats including several versions of HTML, Compact HTML (i-mode), WML and XML. The aimed and reached objective was to allow the e-business application developer to have only one common source code to all outputs. The position included marketing of the product & technology to partners and customers. The product is now evolving to include features to compete with Java EE (J2EE) application servers. The latest release, available since August 2002, includes, among other features, Web Services support. The following results were achieved:
  • Catch up of the delays took by Four J’s Development Tools in the area of e‑business.
  • Very high satisfaction of customers & users.
  • Creation and upholding of a dynamic team with complementary skills.
June 2000 to July 2002.

Project Manager. Development of an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) using Java SE (J2SE) on Windows NT and several Unix platforms. Conception around a very modular architecture that offers performance similar to the one achieved using native development. Integration of the Java 2 and XML technologies. Management of a team of 3 for this project. I also took back the former 2 projects which mean I was managing:
  • 3 projects with a team of 7 in a high technology environment.
  • My budget for 1999 was about 90K USD. For 2000, it was 300K USD.
June 1999 to June 2000.

Jr. Project Manager. Four J’s Universal Compiler allows different thin graphical clients to use a portable p-code (somehow like Java). My goals were:
  • Supervise a German team working on a “Java Client” allowing users to connect to the application server using a Java 1.1 compliant browser.
  • Write the end-user / technical documentation (fully written in English).
September 1998 to June 1999.

Software Engineer. Due to the increasing demand on web based product, I developed in C/C++ an open interface and gateway for web browsers, using CGI, TCP/IP, HTML on several Unix platforms and Windows NT. I was also in charge of the user / technical documentation of the project.
April 1998 to September 1998.

Support Engineer. Technical support in English, French and German. Training and learning period to the company’s products.
November 1997 to April 1998.

Technologies. Java (Java SE, Java EE), C & C++, distributed architecture, HTML / XHTML, WML, C-HTML, XML, XSL/T, CSS, Web Services, HTTP, TCP/IP development, Visual C++, UML, make, CVS, Linux, HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, Windows, Informix, DB2.
